When your refrigerator is not cold, it’s time to figure out what the issue is. Often times it is something as common as a good coil cleaning. But, with these modern models of refrigerators, they are manufactured with various sensors too.

Before we look too deep, we look at the most typical and easy causes for this problem. Here are a few of things that we have found can lead to a refrigerator not cooling:

Is the refrigerator plugged in? This might seem like it’s a funny question, but we’ve been called out to appointments that this was the problem. For some reason, it was unplugged. Maybe a kid unplugged it, or an electrician during a project. Whatever the cause might be, make sure it is plugged in.

Look at the thermostat inside of the appliance. This is a common issue for anyone with children in their house. After all, children are fascinated with dials and buttons and so, without knowing they are doing something bad, they mess with them. So, be sure that the thermostat temperature is not the reason for the warm refrigerator.

Refrigerator Parts to Inspect?

Be sure the vents inside of the freezer are not blocked with food or containers. This is common since sometimes bags of frozen veggies get pushed in the back. There can be food in the very back of a freezer that has long been forgotten.

Check that the refrigerator’s condenser cooling fan is clean and clear of all debris. To check this, unplug the refrigerator and pull it away from the wall. The fan for several models is just at the bottom of the appliance or in the back part of the freezer unit. A lot of times, people don’t think to clean this area of the refrigerator. But, it’s very important to clean it. And, it piles up with fuzz and dust quickly, especially in houses that have dogs and cats. So, grab a clean rag and get the dust out of the coils and cooling fan.

This is not recommended for refrigerators that have a rear coil system. Once all clean, plug it into the outlet and notice if the cooling fan moves.

The Freezer is Cold but the Refrigerator Isn’t

There are a few more reasons for a refrigerator that won’t cool after these more common ones to start to take a look at if the freezer is cool but the fridge is not. The evaporator coils are frosted over. This happens because there’s a malfunction in the defrost heating system. Or the automatic defrost has a problem. The evaporator fan motor can be another reason.

Every fridge has a set of evaporator coils. These evaporator coils are what gets cold and then the fan moves the cool air around inside the unit. The damper control assembly working correctly. The temperature control board that carries the electricity to the compressor and fan, this isn’t likely the issue but it’s worth mentioning.

And, the thermistor could be malfunctioning, which is a tiny sensor within the appliance that displays the temperature. Having one of our repairmen look at it is the best solution but these are some of the most common problems.
